    …映画「おくりびと」で有名な青木新門の「納棺夫日記」には”最近とみに、ぶよぶよとした死体が多くなってきた。ナイロンの袋に水を入れたような、青白いぶよぶよ死体である。私が初めて湯灌・納棺の仕事を始めた昭和四十年の初期には、まだ自宅死亡が五割以上もあって（略）枯れ枝のような死体によく出会った”とあるそうだ。

    　続けて世田谷区の特別養護老人ホーム「芦花ホーム」の石飛医師が”八丈島で食べなくなった高齢者が水の少量補給だけで安らかな往生を遂げる事実からヒントを得て”著書を発表したり、老人ホームでそれを実践していることが紹介してあった。

    　つまり、近代施設の整った病院でチューブにつながれ、無理矢理栄養分を注ぎ込まれ、水の張ったナイロンの袋のようになってしまう死よりも、食事がとれなければ無理にとらずに水分だけをとり、枯れ枝のようになってしまう死こそが、良い死であり、楽な死なのではないか。その期間は、およそ2週間とのことであった。

    　さらに「ニューイングランド・ジャーナル・オブ・メディシン」には、”高齢の末期患者が飲食しなくなった場合、無理に胃ろうなどの処置をとらないでいると、生存期間は短く約2週間ほどであり、あまり苦しまずに死を迎える”と、米国でも同じような報告があることをその随筆は添えていた。
